Off Grid

Off Grid refers to a stand alone solar system that is not tied into the power company’s electric power grid.

Off grid systems are used for a number of reasons, the most common being when the power company's electricity is not available, not affordable, or not wanted.

Off Grid systems have a few more components than Grid Tied systems, as they are completely self sufficient—not relying on the power company for additional electricity. Excess electricity that is produced during the day is stored in batteries for future use. When the batteries cannot provide enough power, a propane or diesel generator is typically used to supplement the power supply. The generator is set up to automatically start when needed, so no lapse in power will occur.
