Grid Tied refers to a solar system that is tied or plugged into the power company’s electric power grid.
In simple terms, the power used by consumers would first come from the power the solar system produces. If more power is needed than the system is producing, or it is night, additional power would come from the power company (utility). In those times when more power is produced than is used, the excess power would be given back to the utility.
The flow of power in and out of the utility grid is measured by a utility meter, which spins backwards (when you are producing more energy than you need) and forward (when you require additional electricity from the utility). This arrangement with the utility, known as net-metering, credits a consumer’s account with the excess power produced, most likely in the summer months, against charges for power usage. In a twelve month period only the net of what was used will be charged.
